We are working on operations with decimals. We will continue to work with adding and subtracting and this week we will begin dividing decimals. Many students need to work on retests from the Statistics Unit. Talk to your student and discuss the standards they are working toward.

This week we will continue our first social studies unit: Immigration. We will discuss what life was like for the immigrants after they arrived in America. Students will be examining the immigrants living and working conditions. Students will be comparing and contrasting immigration from the early 1900s to immigration in 2018. We will also be analyzing entry points for immigrants: Ellis and Angel Islands. In addition, we are watching CNN-10 to help stay up-to-date on current events. This week students will be testing on all 50 states and capitals on Friday, October 26th.  I am happy to furnish extra maps if needed and requested. I am including several websites that might be helpful to students:

Students will be discussing the causes and effects of seasons, tides, and eclipses. We will also be starting a project to learn more about the phases of the moon. Please be watchful for information about the project. I always try to encourage students to share at home what we are learning in class.

This week we will show mastery of division on Monday, October 1. The rest of the week we will work on adding and subtracting decimals. The key is to remember to line up the decimals. Practice this at home!! The area most have difficulty with is subtracting with zeros. We will work on this at length. Also, students will practice skills on the daily review and Prodigy. I will pull small groups to work with students on retest material.

This week we are finishing up our Statistics Unit.  We will test on SP.29 on Tuesday, September 25.  We have been utilizing a “stations” method to work on our standards.  The students rotate between my station, a review station where they work on standards that are not mastered for retest, and Prodigy, a website that allows students to practice skills. On Wednesday we will begin our next unit on Number Systems.  Our first skill is long division.  We will plan to test on NS.5 on Friday, Sept.28

This week we are finishing up our Statistics Unit.  We will test on SP.26, describing graphs, on Monday.  Tuesday we begin the last standard, SP.29, summarizing data.  We will test on SP.29 on Friday.

Happy Constitution Day!! Today we will be attending a Constitution Day program and completing an online project to learn more about the Constitution's Preamble. As we continue our first social studies unit on Immigration, we will be discussing an immigrant's journey to America. We will reading and analyzing transcripts from some of the earliest immigrants processed at Ellis Island. Students will experience a virtual tour of Ellis Island to simulate an immigrant's arrival in America. We will NOT be taking a map test this week. This week is devoted to retesting and helping students to master this geography standard. Thanks for all your help!! I am very proud of their determination and grit as they worked to learn their states. We will begin learning our state capitals next week.

I slowed down our process to give them more time to master the skills, so our Reading tests will be every 7 days instead of 5. Spelling and Grammar tests will remain on Fridays. Please ask your child to “teach” you the vocabulary, this helps them retain it! Thanks for another awesome week, GES students and parents are the best!

Monday: We are working on SP.4 learning about graphs. We are working on box plots.

Tuesday: We are continuing to work on box plots.

Wednesday: Today we will test on SP.4 dot plots, histograms, and box plots.

Thursday: Today we will work on SP.2 This standard focuses on analyzing graphs. Those who need to retest on SP.1 understanding statistical questions will take test.

Friday: Today we will work on SP.2 Today is Fun Friday for those who receive an invitation!

All visitors MUST first check in with the office to receive an official visitor’s pass. This rule applies to EVERYONE! If you visit the campus for a special program or ceremony you will not have to obtain a pass but all other occasions it will be necessary.

 

Graded papers will go home every Wednesday. Please look over all the grades and sign. Please return to school on Thursday. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a note in the folder.
