Social Studies
This week in social studies we will complete our unit on natural disasters. Students will complete their safety plans in class. I do ask that you talk to your child about your safety plans at home for tornadoes. This will help them complete their projects in class. We will also begin learning about resources that we need to survive.

Social Studies
This week in social studies we will complete our lesson on different types of government. We will then begin learning about “People and Natural Disasters” in studies weekly #22. Students will learn about natural disasters and how we can make safety plans for those disasters. Students will complete their safety plans in class.
Science
This week in Science, we will begin learning about life cycles and living things vs. nonliving things. On Tuesday, we will be comparing Gummy worms to Earthworms!

This week in science we will be continuing with our Force and Motion Unit. We will also continue tracking our daily weather, as well as tracking Hurricane Gordon and Florence.
This week in writing, we will write a summary of our investigations.

In social studies this week students will begin Liberty’s Legacy. There will be more in class daily grades during this unit. We will also begin our book study on “O, Say Can You See?” Students will not have homework during this unit because the work will be completed in class.

Social Studies
In social studies this week we will begin learning about maps, the parts of a map, and geography. Students will also be introduced to the different continents and oceans. Students will need to study vocabulary each night. Flash cards work well when studying vocabulary. TEST on Vocab. will be Friday.

2. compass rose: a part of a map that shows the cardinal and intermediate directions
3. continent: main landmass of the globe; usually recognized as one of seven landmasses
4. Eastern Hemisphere: the half of the earth east of the Prime Meridian, consisting of Africa, Asia, Australia, and Europe
5. Equator: the imaginary line around the middle of the earth
6. International Date Line: imaginary line that runs north and south through the Pacific Ocean
7. latitude: the angular distance north or south from the equator of a point on the earth’s surface
8. legend: a table on a map or chart that lists and explains the symbols used
9. longitude: the angular distance east or west from the Prime Meridian of a point on the earth’s surface
10. map: a representation that shows the whole or a part of an area

We will begin reading the story Amazing Birds Nest.
They will have a Vocabulary Quiz on Thursday with words from the story.

Students will be tested on 3.NBT.2 adding and subtracting within 1,000 on Friday, 8/17/18. Homework is usually not given unless students do not complete daily work in class.
