Science

This week in Science, we will  learn the difference between  inherited traits, learned traits, and acquired traits.

Our writing will summarize what we learn.

 

All students were given a password card to access IXL.com at home. This site is to practice the skills we have learned in Science this year. There will be rewards for completing the different sections. Please encourage your child to utilize this website.

A preposition is a word that shows a relationship

 of one word to another in a sentence. A preposition

 is the first word in a prepositional phrase. A

 prepositional phrase ends with a noun or pronoun

called the object of  the preposition. The preposition

Social Studies

 

This week in social studies we will complete our unit on natural disasters. Students will complete their safety plans in class. I do ask that you talk to your child about your safety plans at home for tornadoes. This will help them complete their projects in class. We will also begin learning about resources that we need to survive.

Social Studies

 

This week in social studies we will complete our lesson on different types of government. We will then begin learning about “People and Natural Disasters” in studies weekly #22. Students will learn about natural disasters and how we can make safety plans for those disasters. Students will complete their safety plans in class.

Science

This week in Science, we will begin learning about life cycles and living things vs. nonliving things. On Tuesday, we will be comparing Gummy worms to Earthworms!

Skill: Drawing Conclusions: A conclusion is a decision or opinion that makes sense based on facts and details. When you use information you read or already know to make decisions about a text, you are drawing conclusions.

 

Vocabulary: collection- a gathering of items, butterflies- insects with large, wings, enormous- very large; huge, scattered- spread about in various places, shoelaces- cords on shoes, strain- stretch too much

Subject-Verb Agreement

The subject of a sentence tells who or what performs the main action. The verb tells what the main action is. The subject and verb must agree. A singular subject gets a singular verb. A plural subject gets a plural verb.

This week in Science, we will finish up our weather unit by learning about Hurricane Katrina and the effects it had on New Orleans. Our writing will focus on summarizing the story of the Two Bobbies (ask your child about it!).

 

Social Studies

In social studies this week students will begin reading Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. Students will learn briefly about WWII and the dropping of the atom bomb on Hiroshima from the perspective of Sadako.

This week there will be a daily grade in class taken instead of a test.

This week we will be learning shapes and angles standard 3.G.1. The test will be on Thursday November 29,2018. Homework will be written in planner each day. 

 

Science

This week in Science, we will learn about the water cycle. This will include learning about evaporation, condensation, precipitation, groundwater, runoff, and the Sun's role in the water cycle. Be sure to ask your child about these to see what they are learning.

Our writing this week will focus on sharing our Fall Break experiences, including Thanksgiving.

 

Social Studies

In social studies this week students will continue our Liberty’s Legacy units. Students will learn about great American figures and American symbols. This week there will be a daily grade in class taken instead of a test.

 

The Super Citizen Program makes learning history, civics, character, financial literacy and career readiness exciting. Our immersive learning experiences teach students to become responsible, outstanding citizens.

Reading

We will be reviewing Compare/Contrast, Drawing Conclusions and Sequencing through our reading of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

We began reading this last Thursday and have created Vocabulary cards that will be brought home today. These words will be tested on Thursday. Ludicrous-laughable or hilarious because of obvious silliness, Mound- a raised pile, a heap, stack, Trod- to press beneath the feet, Hover- to remain floating, Extraordinary- beyond what is ordinary or usual, Ordinary- normal, Absurd- ridiculously out of place or unreasonable, Rummage- look for, search thoroughly, hunt, Vital- necessary to the continuation of life, Dumbfounded- astonished and surprise

To compare something is to tell how they are the same, similar, alike, like, both. 

To contrast something is to tell how they are different, difference, however, although, but, except, unlike, unless, on the other hand. 

Sequence words we have discussed this year are: first, second, next, then, last, recently, after, before, finally, at last, currently, beginning, end.

 Drawing conclusions is when you make a guess as to what you think will happen next.

Reading Story: Pushing Up the Sky 

Literary Elements: Character, Setting, and Plot A character is a person or animal in a story. The setting is when and where a story takes place. The plot of a story includes the important events that happen at the beginning, middle, and end. 

 

Vocabulary Words: antlers- one of two bony growths on the head of a deer and certain other animals, imagined- formed pictures in a person’s mind of things or ideas that are elsewhere or not real, languages- spoken or written words, narrator- a person who tells the story, overhead- over the head; placed high up; above, poked- pushed with something pointed; jabbed

Our new skills are: Graphic Sources and Important Ideas. We will also be working on appropriate phrasing and punctuation while reading.

This week in math we will be reviewing and retesting standards 3.NBT.1 (rounding to the tens and hundreds), 3.NBT.2 (adding and subtracting within 1,000), 3.OA.1 (grouping items to create products), 3.OA.2 (interpreting quotients of whole numbers), and 3.OA.3 ( distinguishing between multiplication and division).Homework will be written in planner each day. 

Science 

This week in Science, we will continue learning about patterns of motions by exploring how a pendulum works. 

We will work on a creative writing assignment throughout the week.

We still need cereal boxes to build our skate board ramps! We can't do the investigation until we have enough cereal boxes!

In social studies this week students will begin learning how to read maps using longitude and latitude lines. We will make maps of our school and answer questions about where buildings and other areas are located using longitude and latitude. Grades this week will come from individual and group work.

Amazing Words: evergreen- green all year round, lumber- wood used in buildings, competitor- someone who tries hard to win, plunge- fall downward suddenly, valuable- of great worth, champ- someone who wins first place(think champion), sprinter- a runner for fast races, acrobat- performs who does stunts or flips, weaken- to take away its power, ranger- someone who takes care a national park

Selection Vocabulary: average-the sum of all quantities divided by the number of quantities, depth- distance from the top to bottom, deserts- dry/sandy regions with little or no water, erupted- burst out, outrun- run faster than someone else, peak- pointed tip of a mountain , tides- rise and fall of the ocean's water about every twelve hours, waterfalls- streams of water that fall from a high place

Social Studies

In social studies this week we will begin learning about maps, the parts of a map, and geography. Students will also be introduced to the different continents and oceans. Students will need to study vocabulary each night. Flash cards work well when studying vocabulary. TEST on Vocab. will be Friday.

Vocabulary:

1. atlas: a book of maps

2. compass rose: a part of a map that shows the cardinal and intermediate directions

3. continent: main landmass of the globe; usually recognized as one of seven landmasses

4. Eastern Hemisphere: the half of the earth east of the Prime Meridian, consisting of Africa, Asia, Australia, and Europe

5. Equator: the imaginary line around the middle of the earth

6. International Date Line: imaginary line that runs north and south through the Pacific Ocean

7. latitude: the angular distance north or south from the equator of a point on the earth’s surface

8. legend: a table on a map or chart that lists and explains the symbols used

9. longitude: the angular distance east or west from the Prime Meridian of a point on the earth’s surface

10. map: a representation that shows the whole or a part of an area

They will have a Vocabulary Quiz on Thursday with words from the story.
